$19.99Read MoreLeigh Gregory's 99 to 111 is a special collection of reflective, memory-haunted dark pop released via Tip Top Recordings. Leigh Gregory is the singer/songwriter and guitarist in the San Francisco band Mellow Drunk alongside Ricky Maymi (The Brian Jonestown Massacre) and has released previous solo work "Rest Your Weary Head" (2003), "Rainy Season Never Ends" (2007), and Sun Salt & Air (2023).
On 99 to 111, Leigh's guitar work is some of his best, especially the almost Dick Dale outro on "99 to 111," the jam at the end of "Is This Where It's At," and the singing, guitar tones at the end of "Wherever You Go." As always, Leigh's voice and lyrics are visual and evocative of specific landscapes and feelings and tactile enough to really set the scene.
Gregory says of 99 to 111: "I started working on the 99 to 111 LP pretty quickly after the Sun Salt & Air LP was released. COVID was over which meant I could go into drummer Jon Weiss's studio to get the drums tracks down live (something you couldn't do in 2020/2021). I'd wanted to expand a bit and explore the more electric side of my music so armed with my green Strat and the top-notch drum tracks the LP was born. Lyrically I love incorporating what I've been reading into the music for anyone who enjoys wordplay you'll find plenty to dig into (yes, that is a phrase from Philip Larkin in the song "99 to 111" and a Lou Reed quote in "Is This Where It's At"). I loved experimenting around with different intervals, delays, and sounds from the guitar on the LP and using those as a backdrop to tunes with lyrics musing about driving, isolation, love, weather, and post-COVID paranoia.
